I went to Bristol Art College (now
University of West of England) and left with a first class
honours degree. While I was there I did a lot of printmaking,
but since then I have concentrated on painting. My work at
the moment seems to be largely inspired by place and is concerned
with using colour and composition to evoke feeling and atmosphere.
Images are distilled and simplified.
I work in different mediums. I
use watercolour for collecting information and then make oil
or egg tempera paintings. Sometimes I work outside using oils.
I also do monotypes and mixed media work. I love the purity
of colour with egg tempera and also the speed with which you
can build up layers which may be completely opaque or deliciously
ephemeral. With oil I am always trying different surfaces
and grounds and often use coloured grounds for both oil egg
tempera.
For the past couple of years
I have been teaching drawing and painting which I find very
rewarding and good fun.
